Green lashes out at referees for non-calls as Pelicans' win streak ended by Timberwolves

New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green was angry with the referees during the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Green felt that the referees didn't blow a clear foul on Zion Williamson, which angered him and ultimately led to him being whistled for a technical foul.

New Orleans Pelicans head coach Willie Green made no secret of his displeasure with the officiating and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night. The incident stemmed from a blatant missed call by Zion Williamson, which fueled Green's anger and ultimately led to a technical foul.

With less than a minute left in the second quarter, Williamson broke through Naz Reed and Jaden McDaniels, clearly absorbing physical contact on his drive to the basket. The ball went out of bounds, and on a controversial call, the referees ruled it was Williamson's last touch, negating the potential foul call.

Enraged by the missed call, Green stormed onto the court and took his anger out on the referee and picked up a technical foul for it. Assistant coaches and players had to step in to stop him, reflecting the Pelicans' intense displeasure. The Pelicans commentators expressed the same displeasure, pointing out a series of questionable calls throughout the game.

The Pelicans came into the game on a three-game winning streak, having won seven of their last 10 games, and sitting in sixth place in the Western Conference with a record of 20 wins and 14 losses. Unfortunately, the Timberwolves ended up ending the Pelicans' winning streak with a victory.

Green's dissatisfaction wasn't limited to Wednesday's game. He also expressed his displeasure with the officiating in the previous win over the Brooklyn Nets, worrying that Zion Williamson wasn't treated fairly by the referees. He cited Williamson's uncharacteristic technical foul for arguing a no-foul call as evidence of the officiating issue.

"You can look back and you can clearly see he got beat," Green said. He usually doesn't argue referee calls, but it was really obvious tonight. They got the call. His size and strength didn't matter. He got fouled just like everybody else."

The Pelicans have a grueling schedule ahead of them, with six games against tough opponents like the Clippers, Kings, Warriors, Nuggets and Mavericks (twice). While erratic officiating may add to the unpredictability of the game, the Pelicans will surely turn their collective frustration into a focused performance to continue their upward momentum.
